Do you obsess over food and/or body image?

Posted by Angie on January 30, 2010

Dear Fellow Seekers,

Do you obsess over food or body image?  Do you constantly think about food and what your next meal will be or even the next few days of meals?  Do you fantasize about eating out at your special restaurants and the pleasure certain foods will bring you?  Do you despise your body, certain body parts, stretch marks, imperfections?

You look in the mirror and perhaps see a pregnant thermometer, if you have thin legs and in your mind a gigantic stomach?  Maybe you’re only a few pounds overweight, but it seems like 100.  Your thoughts seem out of proportion compared to reality.  These are obsessive thoughts.

You don’t necessarily ACT on them, but they sure do zap a lot of your energy, don’t they?  More than you realize….

And these thoughts allow you to continue the internal picture you have of yourself, that you’re fat and ugly and worthless, even though others know this to be false.  What matters the most is what’s going on inside of your head.  You could have 100 people tell you how beautiful you are, but if this opinion doesn’t match your inner beliefs about yourself, you’re not buying it—ever!

When you start acting on your obsessive thoughts, you are acting compulsively.  I know from my own experience this feels like a “letting go,” but not a good letting go.

For example, you’re on a diet.  You’ve been depriving yourself for days, and life seems boring, anxious and unfair without your comfort foods.  You’re sick of salads and resolutions and white knuckling it with the food.  This feels like torture.  You see a big piece of your favorite cake with icing (a lot of icing!).  You know you shouldn’t indulge because you’ll feel even worse afterwards.  You decide to “let go” anyway.  You’ve made a decision or choice that almost seems like it’s being made for you.  It’s that strong of a compulsion.

After you eat the cake, you say “What the hell?”  I’ve screwed up and I might as well eat the whole cake and then something salty too.  So the binge begins.  Next, the self-loathing sets in.  You’ve lost even more confidence in your ability to eat food like a normal person.  The cycle of dieting starts again—deprivation and letting go.  Sound familiar?

Don’t fret even though this may sound hopeless.  There is a solution!  Stay tuned for the next blog about why diets don’t work and what that solution is.

Choice Versus Decision

Posted by Angie on January 29, 2010

Dear fellow seekers,

Just recently I learned there is a significant difference between choice and decision.   Let’s say that I’m going grocery shopping.  I’ve done some meal planning and made a list of necessary ingredients.  I’ve chosen what I’d like to eat and plan on buying the items.  Once I get to the store,   I go to the produce section and do the “feel” test on some tasty-looking, ripe avocadoes.  I say, “Oh yes, I choose these!  I can imagine how delicious they will taste in some guacamole.”

Until I pick them up, put them in my cart, purchase them and leave with them, all I’ve done is chosen.  I haven’t decided to take action.  I can choose something all day long and not “decide” on it.  Doesn’t life sometimes feel this way?  Stuck in choice.  I also see “choice” as something we do consciously as we are aware of it.  I see decision as something more unconscious.  We just DO things without really questioning why we do it.  This normally means we have unconscious belief systems running the production of our lives.  Kind of scary thougth, isn’t it?

I’m sure you’ve often heard that life is all about choices.   We continually make them every day.  Some lead us down the path to joy and others down the path to suffering.  However, I think we should coin a new phrase, “Life is all about our moment-to-moment decisions.”

You may think this is just a difference in semantics.  I think it’s more than that.  When I realize that I’m profoundly affecting my life by my actions (decisions) or lack of them, they become crucial.  I can use my power of self-will to decide to be happy.  We say, “And so it is!” as  a declaration to let the Universe know we are serious about our decision.  It is also declaring that we are now aware of some belief systems that are no longer serving us, and we now want to do things differently.

In tapping, we do something called a choice statement, where we say, “I choose to…..”  Might it be more powerful to say, “I decide to…”?

I keep choosing peace and joy each day, but I don’t always decide on it.  There are times when I “decide” that I’d rather be right and I’d rather be in control of a person or situation, rather than have peace.  Even though this temporarily satisfies my ego in the moment, it is short-lived.  Within a minute, I regret my behavior, my sarcastic words, my needing to prove I’m right.  I am especially challenged with my stepdaughter.  I continually want to control her behavior, even though I may not outwardly display this.

I wonder why it is so important to be right?  Am I that insecure with her?  I am training myself to have a proper defense (to say I love you, I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, aiming these words at myself, when I feel angry or fearful).  This is the ho’oponopono method I’ve discussed.  This defense is not yet automatic.  I am still trying to make it habit.

So just think about this.  What are you CHOOSING  (conscious) vs. DECIDING (unconscious) on a daily basis?  How do your decisions/actions/how you show up in life serve you, and how are they hurting you?  Now that’s food for thought.

Why Do We Over(under) Eat?

Posted by Angie on January 27, 2010

Hello fellow seekers,

I hope this day finds you well.  If you’re struggling with food and body image issues, it’s hard to predict how your moods might swing from day to day.   Typically a weight problem is NOT about the food.  The excess food you eat (or the lack of it if you’re an under-eater) is a symptom.  The real question you have to ask yourself is WHY you try to control your food, and what does food do for you?

My eating problem started long before I was overweight.  I remember that I started using food to comfort me as a small child.  My Dad physically and mentally abused my Mom which really stressed me out as a kid.  The tension was always worse at night when my Dad was around (note that I am not blaming my Dad–our relationship is now fine).  So I would eat food, especially junk food like chips and dip, and life seemed more tolerable.

I also realize that one of my triggers is to overeat at night.  I think it might have to do with my childhood, and I see eating a little larger portions at dinner compared to my other meals as a reward for working all day.  It helps to comfort me and to feel safe and relaxed.

Can you relate to this?  What this tells me is that I need food to feel safe in the world.   At an early age (maybe from the time I was born), I saw my protector (Dad) harm my other protector (Mom).  If I didn’t feel safe in my household, I certainly wouldn’t feel safe “out there” in the big world.

So I turned to food for safety and comfort.  Problem is—the food only provided a false sense of safety.  It did serve a very useful purpose though—to help me cope and survive when I didn’t have a better way.  Therefore, I’m not going to criticize and berate myself for using food to cope with life because I did the best I could at the time.  I was only a child with limited resources and tools.

To this day, food is still important to me.  I enjoy preparing and eating it.  However, I don’t use it as a crutch to avoid life or my feelings.  My hope is that we can all learn to rely on our inner strength and wisdom and less on the food.  We can begin to create our destiny and let go of limiting beliefs and fears.  I know we can do this!  I hope you are starting to feel the slightest glimmer of hope…

Peace & Blessings,

Angie Monko

Where did the time go?

Posted by Angie on January 26, 2010

Hi fellow seekers,

Lately I’ve been feeling anxious about lack of time.  Logically, I know this stems from feeling like I’m not enough, but in my heart, I don’t really get this.  I feel as if I don’t have enough time to relax and re-charge my battery.  I’m the type of person who needs to accomplish much to feel like I deserve to have fun.  Unfortunately, the more that is  piled on my plate, the more I try to do, leaving me less time to pamper myself.  I’m not trying to complain right now.  I’m just trying to expose this illusion to the light of understanding.

The fact is that I observe myself in this lunacy.  I show up in life by being busy and often lately not having enough time to really enjoy myself.  Then I feel guilty because I don’t make as much time for my husband and two daughters as I feel I should.  Then the guilt settles in.  You may have heard that when the joy leaves, the flow leaves, that is, the flow of life, of love, of prosperity.

So what is the answer to this?   I’ve been doing some tapping on this and that I choose to be willing to live in the expanded awareness of the present moment.  I’ve lived this habit for so long that it will take some time to remember who I really am.  It is an illusion that there isn’t enough time, one designed to keep me stuck in my smallness.  So as I keep exposing this to light and love, I remember that who I really am is a Divine being with infinite time.

I keep asking to be willing to surrender this need to control time to Source.  I haven’t figured out the answer to this yet or how exactly to live in the present moment.  If that came in a bottle, I’d be rich.  I continue to meditate and pray and ask God for help.  If anyone has any feedback, I’d love to hear it.

One other thought.  Right now is a difficult time in human consciousness with the diasaster in Haiti.  We are impacted by everyone’s pain and suffering.  We may ALL be feeling more depressed and anxious without knowing why.  I’ve been saying a prayer of protection these last few days, basically asking to be surrounded by love, light and truth.  Have a blessed day!

Peace,

Angie

Dog Readings

Posted by Angie on January 23, 2010

Hi Everyone,

My church, the Soul-Esteem Center, had a business expo in December, and I met a woman, Catherine Hughes,  who does animal readings, whether they are for living or deceased pets.  Quite interesting!  My 14-year-old daughter, Chelsea, really wanted to have one done for our dog, Kipper.  So we did.

It was very intriguing how she knew so much about my family through our nearly 5-year-old yellow labradoodle (1/2 lab, 1/2 standard poodle).  She says she gets thoughts from the animal and she relays this to you.  Kipper shared information about me, my husband and two kids that was right on!

For example, his “Mom,” (this is Chelsea– she picked him out when he was a puppy shortly after she moved in with us, after her Mom died) rescued him.  He would love for Chelsea to walk him more and that she could never over-do this daily activity.  He is very bonded with Chelsea and just encourages her patience.  He said he loves my daughter, Maddie (13), and that she is a little spacy and scattered and this doesn’t quite feel like home to her yet (she just moved in with us from living with her Dad in August).

He said that my husband, Steve, really loves to fish and not to deny him this pleasure, and speaking of fish, he’d like to eat more of that himself!  He said he was proud of me, being a new Dog Mom, and that I’ve adjusted well to him being here.  At first, I didn’t like the idea of an animal living in my house because I’d had a prior bad experience with that.  Oh well.

I got my kids gift certificates for Christmas for them to get recorded dog readings.  I believe we have a lot to learn from our pets.  I spent some time yesterday, lovingly petting Kipper, and it was so relaxing.  Animals give us unconditional love, and normally we give this back to them.  Thnink about it.  Who is often the best-treated living thing in our homes?  Our pets!  If we could love like they do, oh my gosh, this world would be so amazingly different and on the next level of consciousness.

So go hug your pet and thank him/her for how much they teach you about unconditional love! :)

Love,

Angie
